The first one, and still the one everything else is measured against. A corner pub on Princes Street with the original 1908 tiling behind the bar, a fire that runs from April, and a kitchen that has never once tried to be clever. Roast on Sundays until it runs out, which on a good week is early.

Eight taps, six of them ours, brewed in the shed at the back of the section. The garden runs down toward the river and fills the moment the sun clears the gorge. Closed Monday and Tuesday because the brewer needs two days and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Halfway along the trail, which is roughly the point of it. Eight rooms upstairs, a drying room for wet gear, and a bar that has been serving the Maniototo since well before anyone rode a bicycle through it for fun. Breakfast is at seven because the riders leave at eight.

Thirty-four seats above the slipway, and no bar to speak of. Whatever came off the boats that morning goes on the board by four. There are no screens, no pokies and no bar leaners, which is a strange thing for this group to own and exactly why we do.

Fourteen rooms over a bistro that opens at seven and does not stop. Half the guests are here for a week of walking and half arrived last night off a delayed flight; the kitchen is built around not caring which. Book a table and a bed separately — they are genuinely different systems, and we have stopped pretending otherwise.

A room down a lane with a very good sound system and no kitchen whatsoever. Records until eleven, someone playing after that most weekends. If you need feeding, Fernhill is four minutes up the hill and serves until ten.

A limestone warehouse in the Victorian precinct with a room upstairs that takes a hundred and twenty and a courtyard that takes the overflow. Most of the group's weddings end up here, largely because the walls do the decorating and nobody has to hang anything.

Day trade only. Bread from four, doors at seven, and everything gone by three when we lock up and go home. The group's one venue with no evening at all, which makes it the easiest to staff and the hardest to book a table at.

Closed for winter. Reopening 1 September 2026.
Open from September to May and shut tight the rest of it. Naseby empties when the curling rink freezes and there is no honest way to run a bar for four people, so we do not. The hours below are the summer ones and they come back on the first of September.

Four days a week, no bookings, no menu printed anywhere. There is a blackboard and there is Marg, and between them you will be fed on Friday and Saturday. Ring ahead if there are more than six of you, which is a request rather than a system.

Opening 15 October 2026. Function enquiries are open now.
The old print works below the office, opening in spring. Ninety upstairs, a long bar downstairs, and the first Halfmile kitchen designed from an empty room rather than inherited from whoever had the lease before us. Function enquiries are open now; everything else waits for October.
Nothing matches all of that
